          Fiber dics

          Fiber dics
          Let's take a closer look at fiber discs for angle grinders and their advantages over flap discs.

          Fiber grinding discs are round grinding discs made of a material called "vulcan fiber", which is a material composed of cotton or cellulose fibers. They are used for processing steel, cast iron, wood, plastic and building materials. They are suitable for working on an uneven surface.

          Due to the very diverse range of grits from 16-240, the discs can be used for both rough and fine work. The main advantage over flap discs is their flexibility and thus a good ability to adapt to different surfaces, fine and even grinding, faster removal of material per unit of time and, last but not least, a more favorable price. However, the disadvantage is a shorter service life and higher sensitivity to humidity and temperature.

          Available grains:

          16-24-30-40-46 – suitable for grinding
          50-60-80-100-120 – suitable for smoothing
          150-180-240 – suitable for polishing/finishing work

          Disc types:

          A /corundum/ - suitable for processing ordinary steel, wood, non-ferrous metals and their alloys
          C /silicon carbide/ - suitable for processing masonry, natural stone, marble and fiberglass
          Z /zirconium/ - suitable for processing high-strength steel, stainless steel, aluminum and cast iron

          Example of ordering a fiber disc:

          IM-6-115-016A
          6 = disc type – fiber
          115 = disc diameter
          016 = grit
          A = corundum - material

          Maximum working speed:

          As already mentioned, fiber discs are mainly used in manual angle grinders. It is therefore necessary to observe the maximum working speed and the associated revolutions /RPM/ in order to achieve an optimal grinding result and comply with the principles of work safety. In general, a maximum working speed of 80 m/s is stated for fiber discs. The table below shows the maximum revolutions depending on the diameter of the discs:

          Disc diameter

          Max rev./min.

          115 mm

          10 000 rev./min.

          125 mm

          9 200 rev./min.

          150 mm

          8 500 rev./min.

          180 mm

          6 400 rev./min.
