Maximum working speed and revolutions of discs

Maximum working speed and revolutions of discs
Why is it important to observe the maximum working speed and revolutions of the discs? Where can I find this information? This article will answer these and many other questions.

The maximum working speed of the discs indicates the maximum speed at which it is possible to use rotating grinding tools, most often these are angle grinders.

It is given in m/s and is always indicated on the relevant disc on the label, see Fig. below.

Some companies /including our company NÁSTROJE CZ/ use the distinction of maximum working speed with colored stripes (red stripe 80 m/s, green stripe 100 m/s). Most common discs have a maximum allowed working speed of 80 m/s, other speeds are more specific for non-standard discs - 100 m/s is used very often for large discs - 350 mm and 400 mm, which we also have in our offer.

Information of the maximum working speed is included in many European standards, e.g. DIN EN 12413, DIN EN 13743 and DIN EN 1323, which set the safety requirements for tools made of bonded abrasives. These standards are intended primarily for manufacturers to be able to produce their tools according to these standards. Our company places great emphasis on safety when working with discs, all of our grinding tools are manufactured according to valid European standards and meet all the requirements of the OSA organization - the organization for the safety of abrasive tools (more in our article: Safety of our discs).

The maximum working speed is also related to the maximum permitted revolutions, which is a figure that expresses the number of revolutions of the tool per time unit. It is given in revolutions per second (RPS) or minute (RPM). Our discs have revolutions indicated in RPM and this information can be found both on the label of the disc and in the catalog, or e-shop. The maximum allowed revolutions vary depending on the diameter of the disc.

Every user of the grinding tool should be careful to observe the maximum working speed and revolutions to guarantee safety and optimal performance of the tool. Exceeding the maximum speed could not only destroy the disc, but also injure the user during use.
