Chain sharpening files are tools used to sharpen chainsaw or electric saw chains. Sharpening is important for maintaining optimal saw performance and extending the life of the chain. Files are available in different diameters depending on the size of the chain you need to sharpen.
There are two basic types of chain files:
• Round file - Used to sharpen the cutting teeth. This file also comes in a set with a special holder that makes it easier to properly guide the file at the desired angle.
• Flat file - Used to reduce the height of the limit teeth that control the depth of cut. A flat file is also suitable for brushcutter blades with pointed teeth.
Proper sharpening is key to ensuring a safe and efficient cut. Chain sharpening file sets often contain both types of files and sometimes also angle templates or other accessories to ensure the correct angle setting.
The sharpening angle of the cutting tooth is defined by the type of chain and the manufacturer itself.
The correct angles are usually indicated on the chain packaging. If you follow the recommendations, you will achieve the best sharpening result.
- always file at an angle of 90° to the guide bar - saw chains are most often sharpened at an angle of 25° to 30° - parallel to the sharpening angle service mark - guide the file so that 1/4 of the file diameter protrudes over the top of the sharpened tooth
Sharpening the saw chain is part of the regular maintenance that must be performed when working with a chainsaw. We choose according to the chain combination - e.g. 1.3 3/8".
We recommend that you follow safety rules when working. When filing, chips are released and the saw chain has sharp teeth. It is advisable to use protective equipment, especially to protect your eyes and hands.
Files for saw chains are cut differently, i.e. they have a different surface structure than, for example, workshop files. They are therefore unsuitable for sharpening saw chains.
