It is used for penetrations for electrical installations, water pipes, heating, gas and air conditioning. Drilling is carried out both wet with water pressure cooling and dry with dust extraction.
Dry drilling
It is mainly used in finished interiors, usually from a diameter of 50mm to 200mm, for example in brickwork. If drilling is done dry, we must also count on increased wear of the diamond holesaw/drill segment.
Wet drilling
It is more often performed in unfinished buildings or in basements and is used for faster and easier penetration through hard materials (concrete, reinforced concrete), usually from a diameter of 50mm to 250mm. When drilling reinforced concrete or stone, a large amount of heat is generated and without water cooling, the diamond grains can become polished.
Drilling can be done vertically, diagonally and horizontally. Always drill in the speed range specified for the given diameter of the drill bit. A common drilling machine allows you to drill holes up to a diameter of approximately 50mm, while a core drilling machine can easily handle holes with a diameter of 300mm.
It is important to use centering devices and, for larger diameter drill bits, provide a stand for core drilling. Centering drill bits are used to drill a hole, after which the core bit can be inserted and drilling can begin. Smaller diameters can be drilled by hand, for example when drilling into bricks, but for larger diameters, from approximately 100mm, it is more convenient to use a stand, which must be well secured to the base. After mounting the stand, we must check its safe and firm fit. The stand is also usually equipped with a cooling liquid supply system, otherwise the drill bit will wear out quickly.
The advantage of a core drill is not only low noise, but also the fact that you do not damage the area around the drilled hole. It is not exactly the cheapest tool, in case of short-term need, it is possible to rent a drilling machine from a rental shop or order a professional company that specializes in the given matter.
Always choose a core drill with regard to the material you want to drill and the machine you want to use.
Core drills for drilling metal materials in magnetic drilling machines are a tool for holes in steel structures, but they also find their application in workshops and production, where they make drilling heavy and large metal parts easier. But we will talk about them next time.
