          Flap discs

          Flap discs
Each of us needs to grind something from time to time. Sandpaper is a tedious and tiring job, so everyone reaches for a simpler option, which is flap discs for an angle grinder.

And now we will simply describe and explain what flap discs actually are.
A flap disc is practically sandpaper / lamellas (abrasive fleece can also be used) folded onto a disc. Sometimes it can also be on a roller with a shank (flap discs on a shank - fan grinders), but these are intended for hand drills. A classic flap disc is intended for finishing work, surface treatment, cleaning, removing paint, varnish and sealants. And this regardless of whether it is used in a home workshop or for professional use.

As mentioned, such a disc consists of a disc and abrasive lamellas. During production, a binder is first applied to the disc and then the machine cuts individual lamellas from the abrasive belt, which are placed on the disc into the binder. This creates the base of the disc. The density of the lamellas can vary depending on the type and use. Then it is pressed and „cooked".
The disc can be straight, angled, or even with a cutout...
The angle of incidence between the surface and the machine must be adapted to the shape of the disc used.
The size of the flap disc can also vary. From 115mm to 180mm.

There are several types of flap discs and they differ mainly in the sandpaper / lamellas and their composition.
The lamellas can also be combined alternately.
For example, the combination of zirconium and ceramic lamellas offers extreme durability, service life and a large cutting range of this disc even at high temperatures. Such a disc is used for many materials. For example, stainless steel, steel, titanium, metal alloys, chrome, non-ferrous metals and their alloys…

A straight flap disc with corundum grain is suitable for steel, non-ferrous metals and their alloys, as well as wood, and is suitable for leveling and smoothing surfaces.
A convex flap disc with zirconium abrasive has better access to corners. This ensures easier grinding of corner welds.
Another type is a flap diamond disc, suitable for extreme use. For example, for stone, granite, or marble.
Semi-flexible discs with silicon carbide can be used for processing building materials. This is thanks to the material that is applied to a special fibrous backing, which gives the disc a high degree of flexibility. It therefore has a good material removal rate even with reduced pressure on the disc. And thanks to the ventilation holes, overheating can be prevented.
Discs with aluminum oxide (A/O) are suitable for steel, stainless steel, wood, and plastic.
Ceramic discs using high-quality fabric are optimal for grinding edges and burrs. They have a high service life, a large cutting range and extreme durability. Steel, stainless steel, titanium, chrome, alloys, non-ferrous metals and their alloys. They can be used everywhere.

There are also flap discs for aluminum, or even zirconia discs on plastic/nylon. Discs on plastic/nylon are for steel, stainless steel, titanium, chrome, alloys and non-ferrous metal alloys. And they are designed for everyday work.

Although choosing a flap disc may seem complicated, it is not. You always need to be aware of what grinding activity and what material you will need it for. Next, the size of your grinder and accordingly you can easily determine the type of disc that will be most suitable for you.
And remember, when grinding, be extra careful, follow safety rules and use protective elements.

          Did you know that:
the design of flap discs allows you to create a smoother surface than, for example, a sanding belt?
