Concrete is one of the most used building materials, and therefore it would be good to know how and what to drill into it. It is not enough to just have a hard drill, you also need to have the right drill. Forget about an ordinary electric drill for drilling into concrete, you need a drill with a hammer mechanism. A hammer drill will suffice for concrete itself, but for drilling into reinforced concrete it is better to use a hammer with a pneumatic hammer.
A basic list of things that you should not miss when drilling:
A hammer drill/SDS hammer
A drill bit for concrete
A tape measure
A vacuum cleaner
Protective equipment
1) How to drill into concrete
First, mark the place where you want to drill the hole. If you have a detector, you can check whether there is an electrical line in the given place. Then make a hole, for example with the tip of a nail. If this is not done, the drill bit can run along the wall.
Hold the drill bit still, press evenly and perpendicularly on the wall. While you are cooling the drill bit while pulling it out, regularly remove the drilled material to avoid unwanted problems. The drilled hole produces a lot of dust, so it is advisable to use an extraction system that you can have connected directly to the drill. When drilling into concrete, it is not a good idea to use any lubricant or coolant. The only lubricant that we can use is grease to lubricate the tool shank, which serves to protect and maintain the service life of the tools.
2) With what to drill into concrete
When drilling into concrete, it is important that the drill bit allows for percussion. So-called carbide drill bits are suitable for this, which have cemented carbide plates inserted in their tip. In the construction industry, the most commonly used are double-edged drills with a cylindrical shank, double-edged and four-edged drills with SDS-plus attachment designed for impact drills or four-edged SDS-Max drills for large rotary hammers. The offer also includes universal drills and drills with extraction holes, guaranteeing dust-free drilling, ideal for working indoors. It is a good idea to choose a really high-quality drill, because when drilling into concrete, you may encounter, for example, reinforcement that serves to reinforce the concrete. Here, we recommend four-edged drills. For holes with a larger diameter, you can use hole saws that you attach to the rotary hammer.
