This also serves to remove chips (removed material). Therefore, the
tap bites into the walls of the drilled hole with its blades and creates a new, own groove. In order for it to withstand this and function properly, it is hardened to high hardness.
It can also be made of high-speed steel or carbon steel.
A
tap is used for manual and machine cutting of internal threads. A set of two or three taps (
set taps) is usually used for manual threading.
The first tap performs a pre-cut and removes 60%, the second 30% and the third cuts 10% of the material to create a clean and calibrated thread.
For cutting in through holes, we use a
machine or
nut tap.
For external threads we use
dies, the same principle is used, only "inside out".
An explanation of how to use a tap can be found in the article "how to use a tap correctly".
