          How does a tap work?

          How does a tap work?
Simply put, a tap resembles a screw in shape, the helix of which is formed by blades with one to eight helical straight grooves.
This also serves to remove chips (removed material). Therefore, the tap bites into the walls of the drilled hole with its blades and creates a new, own groove. In order for it to withstand this and function properly, it is hardened to high hardness.
It can also be made of high-speed steel or carbon steel.
A tap is used for manual and machine cutting of internal threads. A set of two or three taps (set taps) is usually used for manual threading.
The first tap performs a pre-cut and removes 60%, the second 30% and the third cuts 10% of the material to create a clean and calibrated thread.
For cutting in through holes, we use a machine or nut tap.
For external threads we use dies, the same principle is used, only "inside out".
An explanation of how to use a tap can be found in the article "how to use a tap correctly".
