How to measure correctly with a caliper?

Here's how you can measure with a caliper:

1. Get to know the parts of a caliper:

◉ Main scale: A fixed part with a graduated scale.
◉ Vernier scale (nonius): A sliding scale that helps measure smaller divisions between the main scale marks.
◉ Jaws: A caliper has two jaws: one for measuring outside dimensions and one for measuring inside dimensions. A depth rod is used for measuring depths.

2. Measuring External Dimensions:

◉ Place the object between the two outer jaws of the caliper.
◉ Gently clamp the jaws around the object without applying excessive pressure.
◉ Look at the reading on the main scale and the vernier scale. The reading on the main scale gives you the nearest whole unit, and the vernier scale gives you the decimal or fractional part.

3. Measuring Internal Dimensions:

◉ Open the inner jaws and place them inside the object, such as the inside of a pipe or hole.
◉ Close the jaws until they touch the inside surfaces of the object.
◉ Record the reading as for the external dimensions.

4. Measuring Depth:

◉ Insert the depth probe of the caliper into the hole or object whose depth you want to measure.
◉ Once the rod touches the bottom, read the measurement on the main and vernier scales.

5. Reading the measurement:

◉ Read the value from the main scale, which will give you the measurement to the nearest millimeter (or other units).
◉ Then read the vernier scale. The vernier scale provides greater accuracy, usually to the hundredth of a millimeter.

6. Calculating the final measurement:

◉ Combine the readings on the main scale and the vernier scale to get the final measurement.

7. Ensuring accuracy:

◉ Always make sure the caliper is zeroed before measuring.
◉ Make sure there is no dirt or dust on the measuring surfaces.
