What types of wrenches do we know?
Wrenches are among the basic equipment of both home and professional workshops, and many people might be confused by their names and which wrench to use on which nut. In this article, we will look at the basic types of wrenches.

They are mainly distinguished by the size and shape of the ring. Open-end wrenches are placed on the nut from the side. The most commonly used tools for working with nuts are hand wrenches, we have flat open-end wrenches (side-end), or combination wrenches or ring-end wrenches.

          FLAT WRENCHES
Open-end wrenches are single-sided or double-sided, where each side of the wrench has a head of a different size. With an open-end wrench, we can get into hard-to-reach places better. The dimensions of flat wrenches usually range from 5 to 80 mm. They are forged from steel, brass, stainless steel. The most commonly used open-end wrenches include wrenches with a black surface finish to improve appearance and corrosion resistance, and wrenches with a chrome-plated polished surface.
A special type of flat wrench is a flare nut wrench, which is used, for example, when repairing car brakes.

          RING WRENCHES
Ring wrenches with a round end and internal teeth surround the nut or screw head, on which they are placed from above. They can be straight or offset. Offset rings allow loosening/tightening embedded screws/nuts.

          COMBINATION WRENCHES
Combination wrenches, open on one side and ring wrenches on the other. Combination wrenches are always double-sided, with both ends having the same size. A combination wrench is a combination of the two previous ones.

          RATCHET WRENCHES
Ratchet wrenches were created by combining ordinary wrenches with ratchets. They make work easier and faster, and allow work even in confined spaces. They can be ring or combination wrenches. In the first case, these are rings with a ratchet mechanism on both ends, in the second case, an open head and one ring with a ratchet mechanism. There are also articulated ratchet wrenches or ratchet wrenches with swivel head.

          TUBULAR WRENCHES
Tubular wrenches consist of a tube that is operated by a plug (wrench) inserted through a hole. They are used for deeply located screws or nuts. The main advantage is the thin wall, which allows them to be used on a nut that does not have much space around it.

          HEX KEYS
Hex or Allen keys are bent at a right angle, so they allow maximum use of the force exerted. Their hexagonal end is inserted into screws with a hexagonal groove. They are most often used when assembling furniture or repairing bicycles.

          There are different variants:
          short
          with ball
          extended with ball
          inch
          in a set

          TORQUE WRENCHES
They are mainly used in the automotive industry. Torque wrenches are used when we need to know the tightening force, or to precisely tighten a nut with the required torque. They allow tightening to an exact torque (unit Nm = newton meter). We set the torque value on the tool, and as soon as we reach this value, the wrench will notify us.

If we require a universal wrench, we look for an adjustable wrench that adapts to the required size of the nut. They have two straight opposing jaws that are moved closer or further apart by a screw mechanism.

Choosing the right wrench is essential for efficient and reliable performance of work tasks.
