There are several different types of drill bits for wood, each of which has a different shape and is designed for specific drilling tasks.
The basic types of drill bits include twist drills, auger drill bits, flat drills and Forstner drills.
SPIRAL DRILLS
These drill bits are suitable for most drilling tasks. They are made of high-speed steel (HSS). They have a cylindrical or hexagonal shank and a single or double spiral, which ends with two cutting edges, in the middle of which is a centering tip. The cutting spiral edges help to remove sawdust and allow for fast and efficient drilling. Twist drill bits for wood are suitable for soft or medium-hard wood. For very hard wood, you can use drill bits with a carbide tip. Drills are also available in different lengths, classic, extended or extra long.
AUGER DRILL BITS
Auger drills are designed for precise drilling of deep and shallow holes in wood, especially in beams. They are made of chrome-vanadium steel (CV). They have a hexagonal shank, which guarantees a firm hold in the chuck. They can also be with SDS+ clamping. Thanks to their spiral shape, they successfully remove material from the drilled hole.
FLAT DRILLS
Flat drills are characterized by the fact that instead of a spiral, they have a flat blade, which has sharp pre-cutting edges on both sides and a sharp tip in the center for precise drilling and guiding the drill. They usually have a hexagonal shank. The length of the drill is up to 150mm, but it can be extended with an extension. They are suitable for drilling into soft and hard wood and cut through and blind holes. They are used when installing locks, hinges and pins.
FORSTNER DRILL BITS
You can create a wide, flat, shallow hole with a Forstner drill. These drills have a short central tip and several large cutting edges. They are made of highly resistant carbon steel and some have embedded SK cutting blades. They can handle both soft and hard wood, chipboard and MDF. They are designed for impassable holes and are used, for example, for furniture hinges and drilling out knots from boards.
In addition to the basic types mentioned, there are also several special wood drills. hole saws, mortise drills and countersinks.
Wood is a soft material and drilling into it is relatively easy. Drill through it with a drill without hammering. Start with lower speeds and gradually increase them. If you are smoking from the hole while drilling, there is no point in pouring water or oil into it. For example, it could mean that the drill bit is already dull, or that it is not intended for wood.
