A Forstner drill bit is a special type of wood drill bit designed to create precise and clean holes with a flat bottom in wood or other soft materials. It is named after its inventor, Benjamin Forstner. It is equipped with a centering tip ensuring precise drilling, two peripheral cutting edges and two main cutting edges. This drill is mainly used in carpentry, furniture production, e.g. when drilling holes for mounting door hinges or when creating holes for pins or fasteners. You can use a Forstner bit for removing knots or use a tenon plug cutter for creating a plug.
Characteristics:
Precision: Thanks to the guidance on the perimeter of the drill and the central tip, it allows drilling holes without tearing out material.
Flat bottom: The hole created has a flat bottom, which is convenient for embedding screws or hinges, for example.
Wide Diameters: Forstner drill bits are available in a variety of diameters, typically from 15mm to 65mm or more.
Guidance: The drill does not deviate from the intended path and is therefore also suitable for drilling close to the edge of the material.
The Forstner drill bit is ideal for use with a drill or a bench drill as it provides high precision and control over drilling depth. Usable in all drills with a 10 mm chuck. No other type of drill bit can match the quality of the cut around the edge and walls of the hole.
The Forstner bits are available in a version with carbide edges or in a tool steel version. A bit with carbide edges has very good performance and a long service life, a bit made of tool steel is more for occasional drilling.
Forstner drills with inserted carbide cutting plates are intended for drilling precise holes. No other type of drill bit can match the quality of the cut around the edge and walls of the hole.
