The drills have a special cone-shaped shank. This shank shape is designed to fit well into a conical chuck, which holds it firmly during drilling.
The most common type of taper shank for drills is the Morse taper shank. It has several sizes, designated by numbers that indicate specific shank diameters, such as MK1, MK2, MK3, etc. There are also other types of taper shanks, such as B12, B16, or BT types, which differ according to the specific requirements of the device.
Drills can also be selected according to the material:
HSS- recommended for regular drilling in components made of unalloyed and alloyed steel, steel-cast iron up to a strength of 900 N/mm2, gray, tempered and ductile cast iron, sintered steel, short-chipping aluminum alloys, bronze, tough brass, etc. They comply with DIN 345 RN and ČSN 221140 standards.
HSSCo5- recommended for drilling in components made of difficult-to-machine materials, alloyed steel and cast steel, especially for drilling in steel for hot and cold volume forming, rolling mill rolls, steel for carburizing and tempering, stainless steel. They comply with DIN 345 RN and ČSN 221143 standards.
HSSCo8 - used to drill HARDOX 500, as well as alloyed carburizing, nitriding, spring, tool and high-speed steels.
Carbide - or cemented carbide. These drills have a cemented carbide tip and a tool steel body and are designed for drilling hardened steels up to 40 HRC and other difficult-to-machine materials. They can also be used to drill fiberglass and other abrasive materials.
Taper shank drills are commonly used in bench drills, CNC machines or other industrial machines where a highly stable clamping is required. They are capable of transmitting greater forces and provide greater stability and accuracy when drilling harder materials such as metal, steel or other alloys.
An important accessory for taper shank drills are Morse taper sleeves, which are used to adapt the size of the drill shank to the clamping mechanism. They allow the transition between different Morse taper sizes, for example from MK3 to MK2. Furthermore, taper mandrels for clamping drill chucks with an internal cone, into machine spindles with a Morse taper, which can be combined with Morse taper sleeves ČSN241240 and ČSN241245. We can also use key drivers (for tools with a Morse taper), which are inserted into the spindle slot and the tool is released by striking it with a hammer.
